There's actually nothing wrong with suggesting an issue that could be discussed. As usual the thought police swoop to try and stifle genuine discussion.

As it happens I don't think Bilic's assessment of players seems to have been all that reliable. He pretty clearly read Antonio completely wrong, and the consequences of that for the right-back position, squad balance etc were catastrophic. It took him a year to realise Obiang should probably be in our first 11, when I think it was pretty obvious from the start. His assessment of Tore clearly wasn't too accurate. I don't really understand the way Burke or Fletcher have been dealt with as young players - it seems to me their potential has been missed or left unexploited so far. Okay, Bilic sees his players a lot more closely than I do, but I think it's worth flagging up a potential issue.

Alex v says
But managers often have little or no actual experience of assessing players - they almost certainly haven't done it for a living, nor do they necessarily have any real guidance on what to look for in a young player.

So when slav selects his team he rings the scout up to see if he should selecct him? you on drugs V?
Bilic can't assess ability??? there is something seriously wrong with you V seriously seriously wrong

If only we had Alex as our manager.

Do you know what his IQ is, Scraper?

Re: Slav on developing young players - Alex V's head will implode
Isn't the reason many are so aware of Oxford's potential because Slav gave him his chance?

Collins and Fonte are both outstanding professionals, and have had great careers. Both great role models for the two Reece's, whilst still give them both a realistic timeline to break into the first team at a young age.

All well and good when you're talking about wingers and strikers, don't recall too many doing experimenting with teenage centre backs mid season, different kettle of fish entirely. I imagine we may see Oxford at least towards end of the season, and Burke will start making the bench next season

Cool, so we are doing it. Why did you think we hadn't been then?

Look at some of the younger players we have signed recently:

Martinez
Fletcher
Fernandes
Quina
Samuelson
Belic
Dobson
Holland

they are just the ones off the top of my head, I'm sure those that watch the u23s and youths can reel out many more.

If we have been doing that...it hasn't been done well at all...

So either the folks doing it are not very good...or the way we are doing it is not working...

Either way...or both...

Need to improve...!!!

Texas in talking absolute shit shocker.

Also, how have Spurs been throwing players in? Kane was on loan for how long?

Aaaaaand, if we're blooding our youngsters poorly, when was the last time we released a rough diamond?

The closest we've got to an Academy striker at anywhere near First team standards is...Freddie Sears...

Re: Slav on developing young players - Alex V's head will implode
Excellent posts scott_d.

What you're really describing is a basic approach where actually no young player would ever be played. Unless by some miracle they start off better than the senior pros (as Bilic points out even Rio couldn't do that). Or there's such an injury crisis that they have to be played.

The other issue here is who does the assessing? As a noted quant pointed out on twitter earlier this month, it's almost always assumed that managers are the same or better than accomplished scouts - ie that they are good at assessing ability as well as man management, coaching and tactics. But managers often have little or no actual experience of assessing players - they almost certainly haven't done it for a living, nor do they necessarily have any real guidance on what to look for in a young player.

BTW...

When was the last time we developed a STRIKER from The Academy...or a,Creative MF...

Those are the High Value players...and The Academy should focus more on them...

TI

Half a season, possibly less. but let's also not forget that times are different now and there is more on the line for a manager who tries to promote youth. you are also referring to two players who people have credited with being as amongst the best players in their positions of their generation.
